1% Better

Last week, for my day job I had the pleasure of listening to Chris and Nik Nikic speak. Chris Nikic is the first and only person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman and run all six Global Marathon Majors. He has also won two ESPYs, become a global Ambassador for the Special Olympics, Ironman and Laureas.

1% Better

The concept of 1% better is that you can do anything if you just try to be 1% better at a time. You do this to help build grit and until you have momentum. This helps you build habits without making you want to stop. But first...you need to...

Dream --> Goal --> Plan

First, you need to create a success plan. You need one clear goal (just ONE). This goal gives you a clear target to aim for and move towards. The plan? To get 1% better every day. The most important thing? Make it fun!

As you work towards your 1% (or in some cases - just one more) - you achieve. If you achieve it stimulates enorphins and endorphins are the brain's happy drugs.

Examples:

  • If you want to run a 5k - maybe you run so long or so far a couple days a week and then increase it by small amounts.
  • You want to write a novel. Set a goal to write so many words in a time period and then increase it by 1% or an element of 1.

So the question is..."What would you do if you knew you could not fail?"
